ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara Review: The Clean Mascara That Saved My Lashes

For years, I layered drugstore mascaras, and in return, my eyes became easily irritated, and my lashes started to thin. In the video above, I share what led me to switch to ILIA's Limitless Lash Mascara, which has become my mascara of choice for years.

I used to be that person who would apply a million coats to my lashes, using different drugstore mascaras—one for length, and one for volume. This was the biggest problem; I was using waterproof formulas which were brutal on my lashes. I would rub my eyes and literally pull lashes out with the mascara. Eventually my eye started swelling, which was my sign that I needed to use something a lot more gentle.

That sign led me to ILIA mascara and I haven’t looked back since. You can still layer it for the volume and length you want, but it is extremely gentle and honestly my eyes are happy again.

Removal is easy too; it comes off in the shower, and with just a quick wash of your face, no need to rub. I’ve even slept in this mascara and been perfectly fine. Not something I would recommend you do, but I think it shows how gentle this formula is compared to the other drugstore mascaras I would use. ILIA really shows what they can do in this mascara.

The Specs & What They Mean

I appreciate that this mascara is specifically made for people with sensitive eyes and people who wear contact lenses. My eyes have been irritated by mascara in the past, and now it's no longer a problem. It has been comforting. The product is tested by an ophthalmologist. The mascara has no fragrance, gluten, silicone, or talc (which can irritate sensitive eyes). The mascara helps your lashes feel soft, and it is a good for your lashes conditioner, as it is made with Arginine and Biotin. The bristles of the wand are made to help separate lashes and build them up. That's great because I love to build up a lot of mascara on my lashes. The After Midnight color is a soft black, not blacker than black. If you love mascara that is blacker than black then this shade is probably not for you. It is also really nice to have a mascara that removes with warm water. It hasn't been hard to clean up after using it.

The bottom line

What works

  • Non-irritating formula for sensitive eyes
  • easy removal without harsh rubbing
  • can be layered for more dramatic looks
  • clean ingredients that don't damage lashes

What doesn’t

  • None noted

Verdict: I would certainly suggest this to all people who struggle with eye irritation from regular mascaras, or to anyone wanting to pivot to a more clean beauty routine.
