There’s a specific moment, usually around 9pm on a Tuesday, when sheet masks feel a little disappointing. They slide. They flop. Half the serum ends up on your collarbone, which, fine, free neck treatment, but still. Hydrogel masks showed up to solve that exact problem, and honestly? They sort of changed the whole at-home facial situation for us.
They’re the ones that look like a little jelly face when you pull them out. Here’s the deal. Hydrogel masks are made from a water-based gel (often using ingredients like seaweed-derived hydrolyzed collagen or glycerin) that holds onto active ingredients and presses them into the skin as it warms up to your body temperature. So things like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol, or peptides actually get a chance to absorb instead of evaporating off a cotton sheet.
The texture is cool, squishy, and weirdly satisfying. Like a contact lens for your whole face, which sounds weird but trust the process. A few things matter when you’re picking one. Look at the ingredient list past the marketing copy: hyaluronic acid for plumping, niacinamide for redness and texture, panthenol for that soft post-mask feeling, peptides if firmness is the goal. Skip anything heavy on synthetic fragrance, especially if your skin gets reactive. Two-piece designs (top half and bottom half) tend to fit better than one-piece masks, which can gap around the nose. Out of everything we tried, one stood out.
The Mask We’d Slap On First
ROUND LAB Camellia Collagen Mask

Skin masks are a mix of great and gross, and I can imagine the sensation of peeling it off is even better. I even knew that my skin is very sensitive to a lot of things so I knew I wanted to test it out before I even saw the ingredients. This mask has a molecular weight of 310da, which means that the collagen will actually sink into the skin rather than just sitting and doing nothing, whilst shea butter and panthenol will create a calming barrier and HPR (a gentler next-gen retinol cousin) will help with firmness while also addressing fine lines. The hydrogel component uses Triple Gelling Technology to make sure it stays put for 30 minutes. It's great for sensitive, dehydrated skin and those who want to try retinol but are scared of it. This is something I would reach for after long flights when I look sick and deflated and so it's a big plus that it can be left on all night – great for those who want that Korean glass skin thing. So, yes it is a lot of mask for a little pink square.
That one's our favorite, but skin is a very personal thing. Maybe you have some redness, or a breakout, or you have that strange tight feeling after a long flight. There are different problems, and different gels. Here are some more that are worth opening.
A Few More Gels Worth Sticking On

Hydrogel masks give a nice feeling on your face like dessert and these four packs are nice. They have rice peptide essence and water plant collagen which help with your skin. The brand claims a 235 percent increase in collagen production which seems a little made up. Put the mask on for 2 hours while you're watching a movie or sleep in it. You'll look dewier and your pores will look smaller. The mask will also shape to your face instead of slipping off like sheet masks do.

THE FACE SHOP Vita

The star ingredient in this product is plant-based collagen, which is a big plus if you have been skeptical of collagen from animal sources. The hydrogel sheet starts off looking white and then changes to clear as your skin absorbs the goodness and hydrates itself. No need to guess if it's done; it's pretty easy to tell. The formula includes hyaluronic acid to plump, glutathione to brighten dark spots, and vitamins to perk up your skin. It's also fragrance-free, which means sensitive skin types can use it, too. It's great knowing that you can leave the sheet mask on for 2 hours, or overnight if you want, to get that extra pampering. Traditional sheet masks definitely don’t have the same feel.
3. Cooling Hydrogel Patches That Target Forehead, Smile Lines, and Under Eyes

Six patches. Three zones. Ten minutes. The patches are divided into sections for your forehead, smile lines, and under-eyes. Each section is glittered with Icelandic glacier water hydrogel, which is cold enough to actually wake you up. (Full disclosure, that's the main reason I keep coming back). The active list is doing some work too: acetyl hexapeptide for the expression lines, coenzyme Q10 for firmness, and rounding it out are hydrolyzed elastin and ginkgo biloba. I get it, it's a lot to ask for a 10-minute treatment, but the cooling effect really helps reduce morning puffiness. Vegan and single use, they’re also easy to throw in a weekender. They're great for before a wedding or, um, a Zoom.
4. Green Microfiber Sheet Masks Packed With 10,000ppm Niacinamide

The most interesting part of this product is the inclusion of 10,000ppm niacinamide. This will help with brightening skin and tightening pores. It also has a really interesting sheet made out of green microfiber. This is supposed to be a step above hydrogel, and the brand says that it will stick to your face better than traditional cotton sheets. The collagen in the serum is ultra-low molecular weight and is small enough to truly sink in which is different from most serums which just puddle on the skin. This is being sold as a 30-day program, with one sheet mask being used per night. You have the choice to either use them as a full month skin care routine or use them as pick me ups when you feel like it.
5. Hydrogel Sheets With Five Types of Hyaluronic Acid for 24-Hour Moisture
JMsolution Bio Multi Hyaluronic Acid Waterfull Mask

Five different types of hyaluronic acid may seem like a lot, but remember that HA molecules vary in size and penetrate different levels of your skin. When you put the hydrogel on, it feels really cold. Like, refrigerator cold and when the gel gets absorbed, it becomes translucent, kinda cool right? The gel actually clings to your face so you don't have to worry about it coming off if you wear it to sleep. JMsolution has sold 3 billion masks worldwide which shows the formula really works. It's a great choice the week you’re skin feels like paper.
6. Five Different Hydrogel Masks for Whatever Your Skin Is Doing
LOOPS VARIETY LOOP KIT (5 Pieces)
See price on AmazonSee on Amazon
Five masks, five different skin situations, which, to be honest, is how skin actually works. One day you’re dry, the next day you’re red from a workout class, then your forehead is protesting. This kit covers hydrating, detoxifying, repairing, soothing, and rejuvenating, so you're not stuck with a brightening mask when you actually need one that’s calming. The hydrogel is the appeal: a cool, jelly-like texture that sticks to your face and melts the serum over ten minutes. Each mask is cut in two pieces, and that may not sound like much, but most one piece masks don’t fit anyone’s face. It’s made in South Korea, it’s dermatologist-reviewed, and it's fragrance-free.
